Treatment options for neuromuscular disease

ResMed has developed therapy devices and ventilators designed to help you feel better during the day and sleep better at night, so you can get the most out of life. The aim of any ventilation is to support your respiratory system, so you don’t need to work as hard to breathe effectively. This can be done either invasively or noninvasively.

NIV is assisted ventilation, providing air to your lungs. This therapy is called “noninvasive” because it delivers air using a mask – unlike invasive types of ventilation that require the insertion of a tube in the trachea.

A ventilation device enhances your breathing and helps reduce the amount of effort required when taking a breath. Your clinician will prescribe the level of pressure best suited to your therapy needs.

ResMed’s noninvasive ventilation devices designed to treat Neuromuscular disease include:

ResMed devices also give you the option to connect an external battery–either the RPS II or Astral external battery – so you can get out and around with your ventilator during your therapy.

Invasive ventilation is where air is delivered to you via something that enters your body, such as:

  • Intubation, where a tube is inserted down your throat to provide air.
  • A tracheotomy, where an incision or opening is made into your throat to deliver air into your system.
